You can\u2019t be certain of the exact questions your interviewer will ask, although, it does help to prepare for common interview questions to give you confidence and your best shot at landing the job.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Given that you might not know what you\u2019ll be asked, the most effective way to prepare for any interview is to reflect on yourself and your experiences. In each question, the interviewer is seeking insight into your experience and your fit for the role.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Questions you can expect to be asked:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202f 1.\u202f Tell me about yourself.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

This is often the first question interviewers will ask. Relax and take a deep breath. They just want to get to know you better. Be genuine and honest about who you are. However, take note that interviewers like hearing stories, so phrase your answer with a structure consisting of a beginning, climax and conclusion. Most importantly, make your answer relevant to the role you\u2019re applying for.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An example for entry-level roles:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In high school, my maths teacher would always give our class a problem at the end of every class for us to solve in groups. This not only grew my problem-solving and analytical skills from a young age but also sparked my interest in viewing a problem from different angles to come up with the best solution possible. Such experiences, drove me to study Commerce at The University of Melbourne so I could continue to grow my skills and pursue my dream career in management consulting.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For mid and high-level roles, you don\u2019t have to go back to your experiences in high school. Think back to the part of your career that made an impact on where you are today and why you\u2019re applying to this role.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202f 2.\u202f What do you know about the company?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Make sure you have done your research to answer this question. Interviewers want to know if you have spent the time and effort to discover what the company stands for, its vision and its values. Having done your research will show that you have purposely applied for the role and indicates that you\u2019re more likely to be engaged in the role.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s an example structure for that question<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI know that <\/span>[Company Name]<\/span><\/b> specialises in <\/span>[key service\/product\/market]<\/span><\/b>. You operate in <\/span>[region \/ industries]<\/span><\/b> and have recently <\/span>[recent achievement \/ project \/ growth]<\/span><\/b>. I\u2019m impressed by your focus on <\/span>[one or two values or priorities: e.g. innovation \/ sustainability \/ customer experience]<\/span><\/b>, which aligns with my experience in <\/span>[your relevant skill or domain]<\/span><\/b>. \u202f 3.\u202f Why do you want this job?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

This is a simple yet impactful question. Stay away from directly mentioning the financial benefits that come with the job, but rather, focus on talking about what you intend to bring to the company and how you will make an impact on the bottom line, the culture and values of the company.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For entry-level roles where you might not have the experience you need, talk about your intent to be dedicated and committed to the role responsibilities mentioned in the job ad.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s an example structure for that question<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am impressed by <\/span>[company initiative \/ value \/ reputation]<\/span><\/b>, especially <\/span>[specific example]<\/span><\/b>. Your mission\/values in <\/span>[area]<\/span><\/b> resonate with me because <\/span>[personal or professional alignment]<\/span><\/b>. I believe my experience in <\/span>[relevant skill or domain]<\/span><\/b> will allow me to contribute to <\/span>[team \/ project \/ company goal]<\/strong>.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202f 4.\u202f Why should we hire you?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Make the interviewers\u2019 jobs simple for them and spoon-feed them exactly what you have to offer. Be concise, clear and most importantly, make it relevant to the role. Tie in your previous experience, and results from those experiences to the outcomes you plan to achieve for the business.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It can be very helpful to use sentence starters such as \u201cfirstly\u201d, \u201csecondly\u201d and \u201clastly\u201d. This helps you to structure your thought process as well as guide your interviewers in the direction that you are heading towards.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202f 5.\u202f What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Be honest about your strengths and weaknesses. Interviewers know when you have googled, \u201cwhat weaknesses will give the best impression in an interview\u201d and used those answers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Trust me, they would much rather genuine responses as it shows that you are self-aware.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make sure that when you do list out your weaknesses, to also include how you are actively trying to work and improve on them. This shows you aren\u2019t complacent but rather active in your growth and self-development.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s an example structure that you could use for this answer<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne of my strengths is <\/span>[skill\/quality]<\/span><\/b>, which I\u2019ve used to <\/span>[action you took in previous role]<\/span><\/b> resulting in <\/span>[outcome, ideally quantifiable]. <\/span><\/b>A challenge I\u2019ve identified is<\/span> [weakness]. <\/span><\/b>To address this, I have<\/span> [actions you\u2019ve taken<\/span><\/b>]. As a result, I\u2019ve seen improvement in<\/span> [what you can now do better].\u201d<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Think back to a time when you experienced a conflict at work and use that as an example. Phrase your answer in terms of the STAR approach.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
