\u200bBoy does it feel good to land an amazing new job, but that confidence can quickly turn to butterflies in the lead up, here\u2019s how to use them for greatness.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the lead up to my first day at Fuse it felt like I had a family of butterflies having a dance party in my stomach. Feeling determined, I tried and tested all of the nerve-squashing options and managed to not only overcome nerves but exceed all expectations and I\u2019m about to show you how you can do the same. Deep breaths and read on.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200b<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 1 Accept and re-brand your nerves<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

According to the legends at\u202f<\/span>Healthline\u202f<\/span><\/a>, nervousness is a natural response to a stressful event. Whether it\u2019s your first job or your 3<\/span>rd<\/span> or 4<\/span>th<\/span> job, everyone gets nervous when entering a new routine or environment. So first things first, remind yourself that there\u2019s nothing wrong with nervousness, it\u2019s just excitement in disguise.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Something that can be extremely helpful in these butterfly-filled moments is as simple as asking yourself: what\u2019s the worst that can happen? Then think about if that\u2019s rational or likely? Chances are it\u2019s neither, so it\u2019s much easier to shift your mindset into getting you excited instead.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is where nervous energy gets harnessed into something that will help and not hinder you. Remember it’s only temporary and soon you\u2019ll be able to settle into your new role with much more confidence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Extra Tip: Find what works for you. If that means setting out your clothes and packing your bag the night before then do that. Create as much of a streamline routine as you can to help you focus on the task at hand.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 2 Knowledge builds confidence (and confidence is everything)<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Now that you\u2019ve accepted and re-branded those nerves it\u2019s time to build up your confidence. Before your first day, make sure that you\u2019ve signed all the necessary forms containing your details. If you\u2019ve received any emails about your first day, pin them so you have easy access to them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is also the time to check the company\u2019s website and social media. Get a sense of how the business speaks, what values seem important. You might have already done this during the application process but it\u2019s always good to remind yourself. Take notes if you need to.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Remind yourself that you\u2019ve got this. Knowledge is power and you\u2019ve got all the knowledge you need to start shooting goals.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bonus Points: practice your introductions so you have something to say that you don\u2019t need to worry about in the moment<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 3 It\u2019s go-time<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Now for the great impression part, get excited because it\u2019s simpler than you could ever have imagined. Show. Up. Early. Even with a bit of time buffer. This way you don\u2019t add more stress to yourself trying to find the entrance or correct building. It\u2019s happened to all of us.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bonus Points: map out your route to work and find multiple parking options nearby. Opt for pre-pay parking where possible. If you\u2019re taking the train, know the lines beforehand and what to do if changes occur.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 4 Talk to e v e r y o n e<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Don\u2019t wait, introduce yourself \u2013 you practiced this remember? Get to know everyone\u2019s names and roles, then you can ask your colleagues for help when you need it. No one expects you to know it all on the first day, and asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Top Tip: ask your co-workers for the best coffee spots nearby, then ask if they want to join you at one of their suggestions! Too easy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 5 Celebrate the small wins<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Remember that on day one, you don\u2019t need to conquer everything. Focus on getting yourself comfortable in the new environment and know your new co-workers. Understand basic systems and establish routines. Be curious and ask questions that show your willingness and excitement for your new role. All these points will help you build your confidence in your new environment over the course of the day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bonus Points: Take thoughtful notes. When someone explains something, write it down. Not only does this reduce the pressure of remembering everything, but you\u2019ll look organised and attentive.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 6 Don\u2019t make a run for the door<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

When the clock strikes 5 don\u2019t run, ask your boss for a quick chat. Taking the time to check in and seeing how your boss feels about the day is the smoothest way to show your dedication and professionalism and they will love you for it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bonus points: Look back at the day and think about how great you did! Don\u2019t dwell on what could have gone better or if you stumbled a bit. Take one day at a time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
