According to Capterra’s Job Seeker AI survey, Australian jobseekers are leading the charge in using Artificial intelligence (AI), with a 15% higher uptake than the global average.

AI is transforming the way job seekers approach their job search, offering powerful tools to enhance resumes, improve cover letters, and even help with interview preparation.

However, with great power comes great responsibility – and potential pitfalls which we’ll cover below. Here’s how to use AI effectively to supercharge your job search.

1. Optimise Your Resume and Cover Letter

Have you ever been too lazy to fix up your resume to align with the job you’re applying for? We’ve all heard this advice a thousand times – because it works – but we all know the work that goes into it can be daunting. With AI on your side, this step is made much easier.

AI tools like ChatGPT, Grammarly, or Resume.io can help you put together professional resumes and cover letters tailored to specific roles. These tools can suggest industry-specific language, improve grammar, and optimise for applicant tracking systems (ATS -this is what recruiters and hiring managers use to manage job applications) to suggest keywords – learn more about tailoring your resume here. To use these tools effectively:

  • Be truthful: While AI can help you articulate your achievements better, ensure all claims are accurate by proofreading and editing – we can’t stress this enough!
  • Customise for each application: Use AI to tailor your resume and cover letter for every role, ensuring you highlight relevant skills and experiences
  • Review carefully: AI tools aren’t perfect and it’s not going to know your experience as well as you will; always double-check the output to ensure it aligns with your personal tone and experience

2. Practice for Interviews with AI

Historically, you might have practiced for your interviews by making up answers to a bunch of questions you found online. Or, you might have watched TikToks or a YouTube video running you through common interview questions for the job you’re applying for.

Either way, these methods don’t have the interactive element that AI could provide. Even if you were to roleplay with a friend, your friend may not know how to respond to you or judge your answers the way AI would.

Interview preparation tools like AI-driven teleprompters or platforms such as Interview Warmup by Google can simulate real interview scenarios, providing you with insights and the change to practice. These tools can:

  • Offer real-time feedback on your answers
  • Highlight areas where you need improvement
  • Provide industry-specific questions to practice

Ethical Tip: Avoid relying on AI teleprompters during live video interviews. Instead, use them for preparation to build confidence and authenticity. Lying could lead to your manager having high expectations and may get you in hot water if you fail to deliver.

3. Stay Ahead with Skills Assessments

AI can help you prepare for skills-based assessments by providing practice tests, coding challenges, or writing prompts tailored to your field. Use platforms like HackerRank, Coursera, or LinkedIn Learning to practice your skills and build confidence for assessments.

While AI can assist with preparation, don’t use it to deceive employers during assessments. Again, misrepresenting your abilities can lead to consequences – don’t get yourself caught out!

4. Use AI Responsibly to Boost Visibility

Ever wonder how large organisations go through hundreds of applications? Recruiters and hiring managers will often use applicant tracking systems (ATS), as mentioned earlier.

What these systems do is they filter out applicants who do not meet the job criteria. The ATS will scan your resume and look out for keywords and skills that match the job requirements. This is why it is so important to tailor your resume to the job that you’re applying for.

AI tools can also help you optimise your LinkedIn profile and candidate profiles in ATS, ensuring your profile is more likely to appear in recruiter searches. Tools like Resume Worded or SkillSyncer can:

  • Suggest keywords that align with your industry
  • Help craft an impactful summary
  • Analyse your resume’s visibility and provide actionable recommendations

5. Avoiding Common Pitfalls

While AI offers significant advantages, misuse can damage your reputation and career prospects. Capterra’s survey revealed that 90% of Australian jobseekers using AI admitted to exaggerating or lying about their skills. Here are some ethical guidelines to follow:

  • Be authentic: Use AI to enhance your application, not to fabricate experiences or skills
  • Understand role expectations: Misrepresentation can lead to mismatched job placements, potentially harming your professional credibility
  • Prepare for verification: Many employers use AI detection tools to verify application materials. Be ready to demonstrate the skills and experiences listed on your resume

Why Ethical AI Use Matters

Recruiters and employers are becoming more adept at identifying AI-assisted resumes and cover letters. If the resume or cover letter doesn’t sound ‘human’ this raises alarm bells. Think to yourself when taking anything written by AI, “would I say this when I’m speaking normally, or in my interview?”. If it doesn’t sound like you, adjust the text so that it does.

Dishonesty in applications can result in termination if you’re found out. On the other hand, using AI responsibly will increase your chances of landing a role and take you one step closer to achieving your career goals. With the right approach, AI can be your greatest ally in navigating the today’s job market.
