The Australian manufacturing industry is on the brink of a pivotal year. With renewed optimism reflected in the latest Westpac-ACCI Actual Composite Report, manufacturers are preparing for a recovery in demand not seen since pre-pandemic times. The report highlights that the Expected Composite Index—a measure of future confidence—has reached its highest level since September 2022 at 57.4 in December 2024, signalling manufacturers’ readiness to grow their operations as they anticipate higher demand.

As optimism grows, so too does the demand for professionals, especially in technology and sustainability-focused roles. Here’s how the industry is shifting and why these roles will be critical in 2025.

Sustainability at the Forefront

With Australia’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, sustainability is now a cornerstone of manufacturing strategy. Government-backed initiatives like the Modern Manufacturing Initiative and growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products are speeding up the adoption of green technologies and circular economy practices.

According to an article by Australian Manufacturing, 2024 laid the groundwork for this shift with:

  • The rise of innovative recycling processes, reducing waste across supply chains
  • Greater adoption of hydrogen energy, paving the way for clean, renewable energy integration
  • Significant investments in renewable energy systems and efforts to shrink carbon footprints

As these trends continue into 2025, manufacturers will need skilled professionals to lead sustainability initiatives and drive their environmental strategies.

High-Demand Sustainability Roles in Manufacturing

As manufacturers embrace Australia’s ambitious carbon neutrality goals, professionals in the following positions will play a pivotal role in transforming operations, from reducing carbon footprints to implementing innovative, eco-friendly practices. Their expertise will help businesses stay competitive, meet regulatory demands, and align with growing consumer expectations for sustainable production.

  • Sustainability Managers: Guiding organisations to meet ambitious environmental goals
  • Energy Specialists: Optimising the integration of renewable energy into production
  • Circular Economy Strategists: Innovating waste reduction and material reuse processes

The Tech Transformation of Manufacturing in 2025

The adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies is another key driver of change. From AI-powered predictive maintenance to digital twins and IoT devices, manufacturers are becoming more agile, efficient, and future-ready. This push for innovation is helping businesses reduce costs, enhance product quality, and improve operational efficiency. These advancements include:

  • Greater use of quantum computing for advanced problem-solving and supply chain optimisation
  • Expansion of additive manufacturing (3D printing) to increase production flexibility
  • Exploration of blockchain technology for secure, transparent supply chains

These advancements will require a workforce skilled in using advanced technologies to harness their potential fully.

High-Demand Technology Roles

As businesses adopt robotics, IoT devices, and AI-driven tools to stay competitive, demand for skilled professionals in these areas surges. These roles are crucial for integrating advanced systems, maximising production capabilities, and driving innovation in an increasingly tech-focused landscape. These include:

  • Automation Engineers: Driving robotics and automated solutions in production.
  • IoT Specialists: Managing connected devices for real-time efficiency gains.
  • AI Analysts: Leveraging artificial intelligence to optimise production and forecast trends.

Preparing for Workforce Growth

As manufacturers expand their operations, staffing challenges remain a critical concern. According to the Westpac-ACCI Report, 16.1% of respondents reported difficulties in finding labour, up from earlier in 2024. Meanwhile, declining overtime hours suggest businesses are operating at capacity and urgently need to scale their workforce.

This shortage is amplified in roles requiring new-age skills, such as those in technology and sustainability. Efforts to upskill and reskill workers, including initiatives like Made in Victoria 2030, will be pivotal.

Strategies for Attracting Talent

As Australian manufacturers prepare for a surge in demand, competition for skilled talent is set to intensify. The ability to secure talent in high-demand areas – such as automation, AI, renewable energy, and circular economy practices – will be critical to long-term success.

To build a strong, future-ready workforce, manufacturers need to adopt a multi-faceted strategy that includes employer branding, targeted recruitment efforts, and ongoing workforce development. Here’s how businesses can stay ahead in the race for top talent:
